Do You Need a Hair Gloss or Toner in Austin, TX?

From the color specialists at Ārdeō Color Studio | Austin, Texas The Ārdeō Collective

A hair gloss and a toner both deposit color onto the hair to refine, adjust, or enhance your existing shade. They're demi-permanent, they fade gradually with washing, and they're two of the most impactful, and most underutilized, services we offer at Ārdeō Color Studio.

If you've ever wondered what your colorist means when they recommend a toner after your highlights, or why a gloss appointment leaves your hair looking so much more polished and dimensional than it did walking in, this is the post that answers that.

What Is a Hair Toner?

A toner is a demi-permanent color treatment applied after lightening to neutralize unwanted tones and refine your final shade. When hair is lifted with lightener, it goes through a range of underlying warm tones — orange, yellow, gold — before reaching a neutral level. Toner is what takes the hair from that raw, lifted state to the clean, intentional color you actually wanted.

Think of toner as the finishing step of any lightening service. Without it, highlights and balayage tend to look unfinished. With it, the color looks polished, dimensional, and exactly as it was planned.

At Ārdeō, we apply a custom toner at the end of every lightening service. The specific formula we use depends on your hair's starting point, the level we've lifted to, and the tone you're going for, whether that's a cool, ashy blonde, a warm honey, a creamy beige, or something more dimensional. Toner is never one-size-fits-all, and the formula we mix for you is specific to your hair on that day.

What Is a Hair Gloss?

A gloss is a demi-permanent treatment that adds shine, depth, and tone to the hair without lifting it. Where a toner is primarily used to neutralize unwanted warmth after lightening, a gloss can be used on any hair type — colored or natural — to enhance what's already there.

Glosses work by depositing a thin layer of translucent color onto the hair shaft. This does three things simultaneously: it adds a boost of tone, it smooths the cuticle for reflectivity and shine, and it enhances the overall depth and dimension of the color. The result is hair that looks more intentional, more saturated, and significantly more luminous than it did before.

We love glosses at Ārdeō for guests who aren't ready for a full color service but want their hair to look its best, for guests between balayage appointments whose color has faded and needs refreshing, and for guests with natural hair who want to enhance their color without committing to something permanent.

What Is the Difference Between a Gloss and a Toner?

The terms are often used interchangeably, including by colorists, but they're not exactly the same thing.

A toner is typically used post-lightening to neutralize specific unwanted tones. It's a corrective step as much as a finishing one. The goal is precise: take the brassiness out, hit a specific target shade, and create a clean result.

A gloss is typically used to enhance rather than correct. It adds shine, boosts tone, and refreshes the overall appearance of the hair whether or not it's been lightened. It's less targeted than a toner and more about overall luminosity and vibrancy.

In practice, many of the products we use at Ārdeō function as both; a gloss can neutralize warmth while simultaneously adding shine, and a toner can add depth and dimension beyond simple neutralization. The distinction matters less than the result, which is why we always assess your hair at the appointment and mix a formula based on what it actually needs rather than defaulting to one approach.

Who Needs a Toner or Gloss?

The honest answer is that most color-treated hair benefits from a toner or gloss and more natural hair benefits than people realize. Here's how we think about who specifically needs one.

You need a toner if: your hair has been lightened and looks brassy, orange, or yellow. Your highlights or balayage feel harsh or unfinished rather than blended. Your color was done recently but the tone isn't quite right. You want a more precise, polished result from your lightening service.

You need a gloss if: your color has faded between appointments and looks dull or flat. You want to add shine and vibrancy without changing your color significantly. You have natural hair and want to enhance your tone without a permanent commitment. You're in between balayage appointments and want your color refreshed without going through a full service.

You probably need one or the other if: your hair looked great right after your last appointment but has shifted in tone since then. That shift is almost always toner fading and a gloss or toner refresh is the fastest way to get it back.

How Long Does a Toner or Gloss Last?

Both are semi-permanent, which means they fade gradually over time rather than growing out with a line of demarcation. How long they last depends on several factors  and in Austin specifically, a few of those factors are worth paying attention to.

Washing frequency. Every shampoo removes a small amount of semi-permanent color from the hair shaft. The more frequently you wash, the faster your toner or gloss fades. Washing every other day instead of every day can meaningfully extend the life of your color.

The products you're using. Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo preserves toner and gloss significantly longer than shampoos with harsh cleansing agents. If you're washing with a drugstore shampoo that contains sulfates, your toner is fading faster than it needs to.

Sun exposure. Austin's UV intensity is real, and it fades semi-permanent color faster than almost anything else. If you're spending time outside — which in Austin is most of the year — a UV-protective hair product makes a meaningful difference in how long your color stays true.

The starting condition of your hair. Hair that's more porous, either from heat styling, previous chemical services, or natural texture, tends to absorb and release color faster than hair in better condition. A strengthening treatment applied at the same time as your gloss can slow the fading process by helping seal the cuticle.

In general, most of our guests find that a toner or gloss lasts 4 to 6 weeks before they notice significant fading. For guests who wash frequently or spend a lot of time outdoors, it can be closer to 3 to 4 weeks. For guests who are diligent about home care, it sometimes stretches closer to 8 weeks.

How We Use Glosses and Toners at Ārdeō

At Ārdeō, toning is built into every lightening service, it's not an optional add-on we offer after the fact. When you book a balayage or highlights appointment with us, the toner is part of the plan from the start. We mix your formula specifically for your hair on that day, and we assess the result before the appointment is finished to make sure it's landed exactly where it should.

Glosses are available as standalone appointments for guests who want a refresh between color services, and we also offer them as an add-on to other services for guests who want to boost their result without adding significant time.

When a guest comes in asking about a toner or gloss refresh, we start by looking at where the color is now , what's faded, what's shifted, what the underlying warmth looks like, and mix accordingly. It's a shorter, less involved appointment than a full color service, but it requires the same level of attention to your individual hair.

What to Expect at a Gloss or Toner Appointment at Ārdeō

A standalone gloss or toner appointment at Ārdeō typically runs 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from the time you sit down to the time you leave. Here's how that time breaks down.

Quick consultation — 10 minutes. We look at your hair, assess where the tone has gone since your last appointment, and mix your formula. This is a brief but important step. The formula we mix is specific to your hair that day, not a standing formula we apply automatically.

Application and processing — 20 to 30 minutes. We apply the gloss or toner and let it process. Processing time depends on the formula and your hair's current state.

Shampoo, treatment, and style — 20 to 30 minutes. Once the processing is complete, we rinse, apply a quick conditioning treatment, and blow your hair dry so you can see the full result.

The difference in how your hair looks and feels after a gloss is one of those things that's hard to describe until you've experienced it. The shine is noticeable. The color looks more intentional. The hair feels smoother and moves better. It's one of our favorite appointments to do at Ārdeō precisely because the result is so immediate and so visible.

Our Honest Take

A toner or gloss isn't a luxury add-on. It's one of the most effective ways to keep your color looking its best between full appointments. We recommend it to almost every guest because the results are immediate, the time commitment is minimal, and the difference it makes in the overall quality of your color is significant.

If your hair has been looking a little flat, a little faded, or a little brassier than you'd like since your last appointment, a gloss refresh is almost always the right move before you commit to something more involved.

Come in, let us take a look, and we'll tell you exactly what we think your hair needs.
